Freebie Friday – Owl Hat

Untitled

It’s Friday again so I have been on the hunt for my favourite free pattern of the week! Whilst browsing Pinterest I came across this incredibly cute owl pattern by Sarah over at Repeat Crafter Me.

OwlHatsAllSizes1

This fab owl hat pattern is suitable from newborn size right up to adults and can be created in whatever colours you fancy; from soft pastel shades right up to multicoloured brights! The pattern has cute button details for the eyes and is finished with tassles on the top, you could even embellish the hats further if you wanted to make them a little bit more individual.

These would be ideal for the coming winter months and very popular for children for when they go back to school. The full free pattern can be found here, where Sarah has posted very good instructions including images to help you create the hat.

Rainy Day Activity with the Kids – Finger Knitting

So with the good old British weather failing us today, here at Mill Outlets I decided to find a new activity to keep the kiddies occupied whilst it was cold and wet outside.

Whilst browsing the web I came across Finger Knitting; the perfect, relatively easy and cheap activity to do on a lazy afternoon on the sofa. Even better it can easily be taken along with you on a car journey to keep them entertained.

It’s not only a fun and creative activity for the kids,  it also teaches them about pattern recognition and how to follow instructions therefore making it a useful learning experience too!

All you need to get started is some wool , yarn or string (any colour you fancy, you can really let your imagination run wild here) and a pair or scissors (adult supervision needed with the little ones). I have found some basic instructions which I will list here but have also added an album to our pinterest full of ideas and instructions.

Happy Finger Knitting!

How to Finger Knit

  • Form a slipknot in your yarn and place it over the index finger of the hand you don’t write with – if you are right-handed, place the slipknot on your left index finger.
  • Pull firmly. You will now have two strands of yarn, the short end and the long one that is attached to your ball of wool or string. Allow both strands to hang below your finger.
  • Using your other hand, bring the long end of yarn behind and over your index finger, so now you have two strands of yarn over your finger.
  • Lift the first strand of yarn up and over the second strand and off the finger.
  • Grasp the two ends of yarn beneath your finger and tug on them gently to close the chain you have created and draw it up towards your finger.
  • Repeat until your chain is the desired length. Cut the yarn and secure tightly with a knot.

The Innocent Big Knit – Get Involved

Need a new idea to keep the kids entertained over the school holidays? how about joining in with The Big Knit?. Every year hundreds of people knit tiny little hats to go on the top of innocent smoothie bottles to help raise money for Age UK.

For each smoothie that is sold with a hat on,  25p of that sale will be donated to the charity “Age UK”. This is a great cause to get involved in and we encourage you to buy a smoothie with a cute hat. Age UK invest a great deal of money into helping the elderly stay warm and toasty during the cold winter months and every little donation helps. Last year over £200,000 was raised to help keep thousands of older people warm and healthy in the UK.

There is plenty of time to have a go at some of innocent’s own creations ranging from beginner patterns to advanced  all available on their website, which they kindly provide the free knitting patterns for. If you’re feeling a little bit more adventurous create your own designs, how about some cute little animal designs or some funky avenger style hats, the ideas are endless!

We think these cute little hats could be used for lots of things, fab for the kiddies toys, cute little bottle toppers for wine gifts or just to decorate your house. For the perfect wool to get you started try our Dolly Mix Wool from King Cole. Alternatively you can take a look at our entire wool selection on our website.

Enjoy The Big Knit!
